Loon Studies

2024 | 18" x 26" drawing | chalk pastel and charcoal on paper

The Common Loon is a beautiful but lonely figure of lake country. These images are created from cropped, blurred zoom-ins on images of loons, reinterpreted as layered, intricate patterns with some shapes emerging forward or pushing back into flat darkness. The dark tonal differences come from using the black pastel from many different brands of chalk pastel and charcoal drawing sticks, producing slightly different densities.
